Floating City

There is a world-wide problem: global warming. Due to the overload of CO₂ in the air the rays of sunlight can't escape the atmosphere so it gets hotter. As it gets hotter, the ice melts. But the sea level rises too. Countries like the Netherlands and Fiji are going to get wet feet, while other countries dry out.

But we've got a solution.

We can't take the carbon dioxide out of the air, or stop the global warming, because it is happening NOW. The world can decrease the amount of CO₂, but it will take a long time. But we have the answer to the problems caused by the sea flooding low-lying countries, like the Netherlands.

Imagine you're in a low-lying country in about 50 years time, when carbon dioxide pollution has reached its maximum height and both the Poles as well as the rest of all the ice in the world has melted. You can see with your own eyes that the sea has submerged the whole beach, and all the carefully build dykes and dams are threatened to fall. Soon, they will burst their banks, letting the sea flow over the land. Where should you go? Well..... It's on poles. It's on the sea. It's a platform.

Our city is on one big platform which is half floating, half standing on poles. The city isn't attached to the poles, so it bobs up and down, and it rises with the sea as even more ice melts ( the poles don't have a limit: they are extendable). You can attach it to the poles of course, so when it really starts to storm you all don't get seasick and fall off the platform. The poles are there to keep it in place too.

Here are 10 facts about the city on the sea:

All the energy is green. The roofs of the houses are covered with solar panels. Around the platform are windmills. Under the platform, clinging to the underside, are turbines which turn around as the waves sweep under it. That way, it creates energy.  As trains zoom past, they also turn turbines around, creating energy. Next to that are loads of other creative and common ways of making green energy.

There is only one energy supplier. All the created energy is sent here. And from this base it sends all the energy to the houses.

On the platform there isn't a lot of traffic. It's mainly houses and other buildings with some roads. These are meant for cyclists and pedestrians. People are encouraged to mainly use their bikes or feet. If you go by car, you go underground. In the sea is a tunnel, for all the highways and railway system.  So when you plan to visit another city, you drive through tunnels below sea level. When it storms really bad, a dome encircles the city, protecting it from drowning from waves and winds. The dome also collects rainwater, which can be used for drinking water or irrigation. Street lanterns and traffic lights above ground use direct solar energy. Street lanterns also have light sensors, so they aren't on while nobody needs it. The cars and trains are more streamlined. This way the vehicles don't waste energy as they encounter less friction. The buildings are painted in bright colours, as that looks much nicer.

All the remaining land is used for agriculture, and is left for the animals to live on. On the platforms it is also possible to grow crops and keep domesticated animals, but it depends on the depth of soil.

The platforms and the city being build on them are fairly easy to build because one can use all existing knowledge about oil rigs. If you can't imagine how the platform is supposed to look after examining the model and painting, imagine a drill platform without all the apparatus and machinery, but with brightly coloured houses and buildings. That's how it's supposed to look.

    Hou op over jullie tto... wij hebben chinees, maar wij doen ons ding ook niet in het chinees...(ligt ff anders, maar tog...) En als iemand het niet snapt, kan je het ook gwn uitleggen... niet iedereen is zo slim als jullie met je tto... Nou in ieder geval veel succes!! en zie jullie vrijdag wel!:P XX

    heey ik wil niet veel zeggen maar jullie presentatie moet er wel heeeeel erg goed uitzien als jullie zo willen winnen want dat project op die foto ziet er egt werkelijk waar en het komt uit de grond van mijn hart: mega lelijk!!! hoortie so ingedeukt? x WJNMK (eigenlijk zo snel mogelijk) veel plezier in nederland sturen je wle een kaartje van uit engeland!

    wij hebben ook een soort van floating city. alleen hebben wij het wat meer aangepast dan jullie.... wel leuk dat jullie het in zo goed engels hebben geschreven. onze school heeft geen TTO maar ik snap wel duidelijk jullie punt(ook bij andere engelse teksten van andere projecten)

    zeur ff niet dat het in het engels is want wij doen tto en dat is hip. wij gaan winnen en jullie niet. we gaan trouwens een nieuw model maken (dit was namelijk maar een voorbeeld zegmaar) dus zeur niet dat het ingezakt is. het is een hartstikke goed idee en als het zo afgezaagd zou zijn waarom zijn we dan door? zeur gewoon niet oke. xxx

    WIJ GAAN WINNEN. het is niet afgezaagd, en het moet nog verder uitgewerkt worden. en er zijn geen betere projecten. en we moeten het van onze school in het engels doen.

    Dit is wel een beetje heel erg afgezaagd hoor. Zoveel mensen doen zoiets. En dan is die van jullie ook nog ingezakt XD. En sowieso ook al doen jullie tto ga t lekker in t nederlands doen dit is toch een nederlandse wedstrijd!

    beetje afgezaagd hoor. het idee bestaat al duizenden jaren. denk je niet dat er al honderden van zouden zijn als het zou werken? hoe willen jullie dit drijvende houden? bedenk je eens hoe zwaar en groot dit moet zijn? ik denk niet dat dit zal winnen, en ik vind ook dat het niet zou mogen winnen, er zijn vast betere projecten.

    Het ziet er goed uit maar? hoe willen jullie het drijvend houden met al die gebouwen erop enzo? en de aarde wegen windmolens al die dingen? de treinen auto's? alles bij elkaar is dat veel te zwaar.

    het is engels omdat we tto doen, als je kan lezen had je dat geweten. die deuk hoort daar niet, zoals eerder gezegt zakt ie in xD als je naar een andere stad wil ga je door een tunnel.

    solar panels mogen wel 2008 zijn, maar is dat een probleem? het is en blijft nog een steeds een geweldige oplossing. Ik bedoel, dijken bestaan ook al jaren, dan hoeven we ze toch niet af te breken omdat het idee al eerder was bedacht? ;)
